“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:8
There are moments in life when we don’t know what’s coming next. It could be a new opportunity, a difficult decision, a change we didn’t expect, or a season where the path ahead feels uncertain. It’s easy to become afraid when we can’t see what’s waiting for us, but Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us that though we may not know what lies ahead, God does. And because of this, we don’t have to walk into the unknown alone.
God Goes Before You
One of the most encouraging parts of this verse is the reminder that God goes before you. You may not know how everything will work out, but God already knows what’s ahead. You may not have every answer, but you can trust the One who does.
Sometimes we put pressure on ourselves to figure everything out before taking the next step. We want to know the outcome, avoid every mistake, and have a clear picture of where we’re going. But faith doesn’t require us to see the entire path; sometimes it simply requires us to trust God enough to take the next step.
Trust Him Under Pressure
Basketball has a way of teaching you to stay focused on what’s directly in front of you. You might not know exactly how a possession will unfold. The defense can change. A teammate may make an unexpected move. The shot clock may be running down. You have to read the moment, stay composed, and make your next move.
Life can feel the same way. We don’t always know what the next month, year, or season will bring, but uncertainty doesn’t mean God is absent. He is still with you in the decisions you make, the challenges you face, and the moments when you don’t know what comes next.
Don’t Be Afraid or Discouraged
Fear can make the unknown feel bigger than it really is. We can start imagining everything that could go wrong, allowing possibilities that haven’t happened to steal today’s peace. Discouragement can do the same thing. When progress feels slow or circumstances don’t change as quickly as we hoped, we can begin to question whether we’re moving in the right direction.
But God tells us not to be afraid or discouraged because His presence doesn’t depend on our circumstances. You may feel uncertain, but you’re not abandoned. You may feel discouraged, but you’re not alone. You may not know the way forward, but God does.
Take the Next Step
Maybe you’re entering a season where you don’t have all the answers. Maybe you’re waiting for an opportunity, making an important decision, facing a difficult change, or simply wondering what God has planned for your life.
You don’t have to figure everything out today. Trust that God is already ahead of you. Take the next step. Keep moving forward. Stay faithful with what He has placed in front of you.
You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you can know who holds tomorrow.
God goes before you. God is with you. He will never leave you.
So whatever comes next, don’t let fear keep you from moving forward.
