What does it look like to really love? Not just the fleeting kind of passion we feel when toward a pursuit, a goal, or a dream, but the kind of love Jesus calls us to with every part of who we are.
When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, His answer wasn’t about performance, achievement, or strategy. He pointed to the root of everything: loving God with all we have, heart, soul, and mind.
Heart: More Than Feelings
To love God with our heart isn’t simply an emotional response. On the court, heart is about hunger. It’s the relentless drive to chase a loose ball, to sprint back on defense, to contest a shot even when your lungs are burning.
Spiritually, heart means giving God the center of your desires. It’s not just praying when things go well or crying out when things fall apart; it’s choosing every day to align what you want with what He wants. It’s loving Him when life is good and bad. It’s devotion that lasts beyond the jeers and cheers of the crowd and the scoreboard.
Soul: The Core of Who We Are
The soul is the essence of who we are. To love God with all our soul means our identity, our hope, and our very life belong to Him. Faith is no longer a side interest, it becomes our foundation.
In basketball, soul shows up in commitment. It’s the teammate you sacrifice for, the unseen work, the consistency when no one is watching. In life, loving God with your soul means every choice flows from the truth that you are His. How you live, how you love, and how you endure are shaped by that belonging.
Mind: Love That Thinks
Jesus also calls us to love God with our mind. Faith isn’t just something we feel; it’s something we understand and grow in. Loving God with our mind means we seek truth, wisdom, and clarity through His Word.
Just as a player studies the game, reads the floor, and anticipates what’s coming, a believer fills their thoughts with Scripture, filters decisions through God’s truth, and learns to discern His voice in a noisy world.
Love That Transforms Everything
When heart, soul, and mind are fully entrusted to God, everything changes. We stop chasing passion for our own glory and start pursuing purpose rooted in His presence. We measure success not only by results, but by faithfulness. Lastly, we begin to see every moment, from practice to pressure, as an opportunity to honor Him.
This kind of love isn’t partial or only reserved for Sundays; it flows through the early mornings, the long days, the victories, the losses, and the quiet moments in between.
All In
Jesus calls us to love with everything we are. Not in pieces. Not when it is convenient. With our whole selves.
Heart.
Soul.
Mind.
All surrendered. All devoted. All in.
This is the passion that never fades, the love that anchors our identity, and the devotion that gives true purpose to every pursuit.
