“The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Psalm 118:6
Fear often arrives before the moment itself. It shows up in anticipation, in the space between preparation and performance, in the quiet seconds before a decision must be made. On the court, it can surface before a big shot or a defensive stand. In life, it can appear before a hard conversation, a step of obedience, a career change, or a season of uncertainty.
This verse doesn’t deny the reality of pressure; it declares something greater than pressure, the presence of God. Confidence isn’t found in pretending opposition doesn’t exist. It’s found in knowing you aren’t facing it alone.
Control What You Can, Trust the Rest
In basketball, you can’t control the defense, the whistle, or the bounce of the ball. You can only control whether you trust your training and step into the moment with conviction. Preparation builds readiness, but presence gives peace. When you know who is with you, hesitation begins to lose its grip.
Life mirrors this. You can’t control how people respond, how quickly doors open, or what the road ahead will look like. You can’t script outcomes or protect yourself from loss or disappointment. What you can do is anchor yourself in the reality that God is with you in every room you walk into, every season you endure, and every unknown circumstance you face.
When Fear Speaks, Faith Answers
When the Lord is with you, fear no longer holds authority. It may still speak to you, but it no longer leads you. Fear asks, “What happens if you fail?” Faith says, “Rest in the truth that whatever happens, God will still be with you.” Fear insists, “You can’t do it on your own.” Faith proclaims, “You’re never doing it alone, you’re upheld by The Almighty.”
Every player learns that when they begin to play only to avoid mistakes, freedom disappears. Movements tighten, decisions slow, and instinct gives way to caution. The same pattern unfolds in life. When you begin living only to avoid risk, you stop walking fully in purpose. You hesitate to love deeply, to lead boldly, to trust completely.
Confidence Rooted in God
Psalm 118:6 calls us into a steady, grounded confidence. Not a loud bravado, and not a fragile self-belief, but a calm assurance rooted in the nearness of God. It’s the confidence that allows you to take the shot, speak the truth, carry responsibility, and step forward even when the outcome is uncertain.
The Lord is with you. Do not be ruled by fear. Whether in the intensity of competition or the heavy seasons of everyday life, you are never walking, striving, or hoping alone.
