Seek First, Trust the Rest

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Matthew 6:33

These words come from Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount, where He was teaching people about trust, priorities, and dependence on God. Just before this verse, Jesus addressed some of the most common concerns people face: food, drink, clothing, and the everyday necessities of life.

He pointed to the birds of the air and the flowers of the field as evidence of God’s care, reminding His listeners that if God faithfully provides for His creation, He will also care for them.

Then Jesus gives this instruction: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

The “things” Jesus was referring to were the needs people often spend so much time worrying about. His message was clear: make God your highest priority, and trust Him to provide what you truly need.

What Comes First Shapes Everything Else

Life has a way of filling your attention with competing priorities. Work, finances, relationships, goals, responsibilities, and endless distractions all compete for a seat at your mind’s table. It’s easy to spend your energy chasing outcomes, believing that if you can just achieve enough, earn enough, or control enough, everything else will fall into place.

Jesus offers a different approach.

Instead of building your life around what you need from God, build your life around God Himself. Seek His kingdom. Pursue His righteousness. Make Him the foundation rather than treating Him as an addition to everything else. When your priorities are aligned correctly, everything else begins to find its proper place.

Trusting the Process

In basketball, players often become consumed with results. They focus on points scored, wins, or the outcome of games. But experienced players understand that success usually follows attention to the fundamentals. The focus stays on the things that can be controlled: preparation, discipline, effort, and teamwork.

Life works similarly. When your attention is fixed solely on outcomes, worry tends to follow. But when your attention is fixed on God, your perspective changes. You become less consumed by what might happen and more committed to how you’re living today.

Seeking God’s kingdom first doesn’t remove responsibility. It simply places your trust where it belongs.

Trusting God With What You Need

One reason people struggle to put God first is because they’re worried about what might happen if they do. Will I have enough? Will things work out? Will people judge and hold me to a higher standard?

Jesus addressed those same concerns in the Sermon on the Mount. His promise wasn’t that life would always be easy or that every desire would be fulfilled. His promise was that God knows what His children need and is faithful to care for them.

Seeking God first is an act of trust. It means believing that God’s provision is much greater than your worry.

A Daily Choice

Seeking God isn’t something you do once. It’s a daily decision. Every day you get to decide what will sit at the head of your mind’s table. Will it be fear, ambition, circumstances, or God?

Before chasing what you need, seek the One who provides it.

Before pursuing the outcome, pursue His presence.

Before worrying about tomorrow, trust God with today.

The message of Matthew 6:33 is simple but powerful: seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness, and trust Him with the rest.

When your priorities are aligned with Him, you’ll find a deeper peace, purpose, and confidence than worry could ever provide.
