Set Your Mind Higher

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Colossians 3:2

The book of Colossians was written by the apostle Paul to encourage believers to remain rooted in Christ despite living in a culture filled with competing ideologies and distractions. In chapter 3, Paul shifts from explaining who believers are in Christ to showing how that identity should shape the way they live.

Just before this verse, Paul reminds Christians that they have been raised with Christ and that their true life is now found in Him. Because of that, their perspective should no longer be driven by temporary things, but by eternal ones.

Then Paul gives this simple but life-changing instruction:

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Paul isn’t telling believers to ignore their responsibilities or withdraw from the world; he’s teaching them that where their minds consistently rest will shape how they live and ultimately who they become.

Where Your Mind Goes, Your Life Follows

Life constantly competes for your attention. Work demands your focus, finances create stress, social media fuels comparison, success promises fulfillment, and fear magnifies uncertainty. Before long, your thoughts can become consumed by things that are temporary, leaving little room for what truly lasts.

If you allow every circumstance to dictate your thinking, your peace will constantly rise and fall with whatever happens around you.

Paul invites us into a different way of living. Instead of allowing temporary things to consume your mind, intentionally fix your thoughts on what is eternal. Think about God’s character before your circumstances. Think about His promises before your problems. Think about His purpose before your preferences.

Your perspective influences every decision you make. When your thoughts are centered on God, your actions begin to reflect Him.

Keeping Your Eyes on the Rim

In basketball, where you focus often determines how you perform. One of the first things players learn when shooting is to keep their eyes on the rim. If your attention drifts toward defenders, the crowd, or the pressure of the moment, your mechanics often follow your distraction.

The same principle applies throughout the game. Great players don’t stare at the scoreboard after every possession. They stay locked into the next play, trusting that consistent preparation, disciplined habits, and sound decisions will eventually influence the outcome.

Life works much the same way. When your attention is consumed by temporary victories, failures, opinions, or circumstances, it’s easy to lose confidence and direction. But when your focus remains fixed on Christ, you’re better equipped to respond with wisdom, perseverance, humility, and peace, regardless of what’s happening around you.

Your greatest battles are often won or lost long before your actions. They begin with what you’ve chosen to internalize.

Living with an Eternal Perspective

Setting your mind on things above doesn’t mean pretending earthly challenges don’t exist. Bills still need to be paid, relationships still require effort, work still demands excellence, and dreams still require discipline.

The difference is that none of those things become your ultimate source of identity or hope. When your mind is anchored in Christ, success doesn’t define you, failure doesn’t destroy you, approval doesn’t control you, and fear doesn’t have the final say. An eternal perspective reminds you that today’s circumstances are temporary, but God’s faithfulness lasts forever.

Instead of asking, “How can I get through today?” begin asking, “How can I honour God today?” That subtle shift changes not only your outlook, but also your priorities.

A Daily Decision

A Christ-centered mind isn’t developed by accident. Just as strength is built through consistent training, spiritual focus grows through daily time spent in God’s Word, prayer, worship, gratitude, and choosing His truth over the many voices competing for your attention.

Every day presents the same choice: What will occupy your mind?

Will your thoughts be shaped by fear, comparison, and circumstance, or by God’s truth and His promises?

Paul’s encouragement is as relevant today as it was to the believers in Colossae. Set your mind higher. Fix your eyes on Christ. Because when your thoughts are anchored above, you’ll find the strength, peace, and perspective to faithfully navigate everything in the world.
